Sermon Series: "At The Movies"

main image

"AT THE MOVIES" is a super fun & exciting sermon series!

We decorate our lobbies in our favorite movie themes and invite friends and family. During the experience, we show snippets of popular films and we use them to illustrate biblical truths. Our hope is that it will be one of the most fun sermon series we do all year!

We encourage you to try and watch these films before the Sunday we preach on them!

Because of copyright rules surrounding the distribution of films, we can't share the scripts, message videos, or any licensed materials we use during "At The Movies". This is one of the only series of the year for which we cannot supply the main teaching video online.

Week 1

THEME: Hope

MOVIE: "Shawshank Redemption"

Andy Dufresne is wrongly accused and convicted of a crime he didn't commit and sentences to 2 life terms in Shawshank prison. What most would consider to be a hopeless situation, Andy has this incredible way of maintaining hope for himself and at the same time giving hope to other inmates. Followers of Jesus know that no matter what is thrown against us in this world we can keep hope alive because our hope is in Jesus!

WARNING: There is some inappropriate language in this movie. It is a Rated "R" film. None of the clips shown on Sunday will have inappropriate language.

Week 2

THEME: Perseverance

MOVIE: "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King"

As people, we make many mistakes and bump our heads along the way. We will feel like giving up. In our Christian walk, perseverance ultimately comes from reliance on other Christians, God’s Word, and His Holy Spirit. In "LOTR: Return of the King", Frodo gives up on his quest. Sam literally carries Frodo to throw the ring into the fire and helped him persevere and complete the mission. Similarly, God calls us to a mission, and in order to complete what God calls us to do, we need someone like a Sam in our lives. Thankfully, when God calls us, He sends us the Holy Spirit to help us persevere.

Week 3

THEME: Freedom

MOVIE: "Frozen"

Elsa is literally "Frozen" in her past. Her identity is based in fear: fear of hurting others, fear of her failures, and fear of being judged for who she is. She believes the lie that freedom is found in hiding and isolation. Elsa literally becomes a "Queen of Isolation". Perhaps the answer is not to just "Let It Go" because the cold does actually bother us (anyway). Yet, until we find freedom everything in our lives is frozen: our relationship with God, our friendships with others, and our beliefs about ourselves. Unless we find freedom in Christ we will never truly walk in our full purpose.

Week 4

THEME: Purpose

MOVIE: "The Avengers: Infinity War"

If you have not heard about The Avengers and the MCU, well, you must be living under a rock. Marvel has created one of the most popular movie franchises in Hollywood history. Throughout the story of the Avengers we see the power of unity and the beauty of purpose as the greatest superheroes join forces for a singular cause. When we unite as the body of Christ, living in our full purpose as the church, amazing things happen in the name of God as we proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ together!

WE HOPE TO SEE YOU
